From broke to business owner

From begging for R20 to business owner

Christmas Eve 2009, without warning, I was called in by HR and given a letter telling me that my employment was terminated immediately and I had been retrenched.

I was unfairly retrenched, it was the same time that the country and world went into recession.

There was a personal issue between my then manager and I, and if you work in a toxic workplace, then you know how certain people in higher positions can act.

It’s expensive to be alive- at any age

I was in shock, I support my family, I had car payments, we were on the verge of losing our house and I was paying the back payments on the rates, hoping I could save our home, I was around 21 /22 years old. This was a huge responsibility for young person to take on, so you can imagine how that job loss shook my world.

People are cruel like that, we lost our house, even after spending all that money trying to save it.

I moved in with my ex .

I was grateful that my ex helped me financially, but this also meant that he owned me. And boy, did he own me, even after I got back on my feet.

My father didn’t know I moved in with my ex at the time, and when he found out, I was forced to marry.

After being retrenched, I was frantically looking for employment, taking anything that would come my way, no matter how little the pay was.

One day I got an interview and my ex was basically feeding me at this point. I asked him for some money to pay for the parking ticket after the interview and he said no.

I went to my interview, knowing that when I park, I will be stuck  inside, but what other choice did I have?

I cried

When it was time to leave, the amount I needed to pay was R20 which I didn’t have. I called my ex and he told me that he was busy at work…I didn’t know what to do.

I spotted a lady walking to her car, I went to her and I told her that I didn’t have money to pay for my ticket and asked if she could help.

In all fairness,  I know I looked dumb, standing in nice, interview clothes but asking for a hand-out. I will never forget the look of disgust on her face. The look on her face made me cry knowing that I exhausted my last option. I begged her to help and asked if she could pay in the machine, don’t give the money to me. I don’t need the money, I needed help getting out of the parking. She said no.

Eventually, after waiting for hours, my ex showed up and gave me R20.

Get to work Kammy

I promised myself that I will never beg anyone for anything, especially money ever again!

I worked my butt off, eventually landing a sales rep job, working hard, earning commission, paying for my studies in instalments and I kept studying from 2011 until 2018 - when I graduated from university with my Honors in Marketing Management.

After graduating, I applied for a marketing position and I was given a 6 month trial before I got the job.

Yayness!!! Damn Kammy, you did well 😊

The harder I worked, the luckier I got! The luckier I got, the more I didn’t have time for myself or life. My salary kept increasing, that R20 was a distant memory, but so was my personality.

Then I forgot who I am

I got so busy, that I started forgetting who I was in the process.

Until one day I decided…enough is enough!!

I made the tough decision to leave my well-paying job and start my own business.

Here I am, typing away at 7am on a Sunday morning, because I love what I do.

I now teach people how to earn an income online so you don’t have to rely on others for financial support. It doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re in. Your educational level, skills and experience do not matter.

The only thing I ask of all the students in my make money program is to take their financial freedom seriously and be consistent, showing up and doing the work every day so that the work works for you.

If you’d like to join the program or have any questions, you’re welcome to reach out to me by completing the contact form or sending an email.

Take care, I’ll be back soon!
